Is it legal to download online video? A plain-language starting point

Review common lawful scenarios, platform terms, copyright limits, and why a public URL does not automatically grant reuse rights.

Publicly viewable does not mean freely reusable

A public page tells you that the platform permits viewing under its current access rules. It does not automatically transfer copyright or grant permission to redistribute, sell, or republish the media.

Common authorized situations

The clearest cases involve your own upload, explicit permission, a license that permits the intended use, or public-domain material.

  • Your own original upload
  • Written permission from the rights holder
  • Creative Commons use within the license terms
  • Public-domain media
  • A legal exception assessed for your jurisdiction and purpose

Platform terms and copyright are different questions

A use can raise both contract and copyright issues. Platform terms may restrict downloading even where a separate copyright exception might apply. For consequential use, obtain qualified legal advice rather than treating a downloader page as a legal opinion.
